Liz Tew shows a vanity is anything but vain.
For many of us, a day begins where it ends: in front of a mirror, with trusty tools and cosmetics nearby. So when Liz Tew of Liz Tew Interiors added a bathroom to her 1920s home, including a vanity was a no-brainer. “I spend more time getting ready in the morning than my husband does, so it made sense to allocate enough room for one vanity to accommodate a vanity stool, makeup, hair tools, and more,” she explains.
A vanity is a designated place to hold all that goes into beauty and skincare routines: moisturizers and curling irons, lipsticks and eyeliners, fragrant bottles of perfume. Products can quickly pile up on a counter, but professionally and personally, Tew prefers a clutter-free look. Cosmetics are stowed in the extra-long drawer above her stool, keeping the counter nice and neat. “I love that those items are easily accessible and that I no longer have to go digging for them in a deep cabinet,” she adds.
As an interior designer, Tew works with clients to personalize their vanity in function and design. As her own client, she opted for a classic aesthetic with modern touches. “A white vanity is timeless and gives you the flexibility to pull in color and flair elsewhere,” she explains. “That’s exactly the route we took. We chose a white lacquer for our vanity cabinets and selected fun, unique lighting and rugs in addition to a more modern vanity stool.” The result is a striking place where Tew greets and concludes each day.
Tew loves that the extra-long drawer above her stool makes her cosmetics and products easily accessible. Her favorite stashed items include Kiehl’s deep cleansing clay masque and Beautycounter mascara.
