I grew up in central Indiana and my father had relatives with farms in the southern area of the state. It was always a treat to go visit them, mostly because they raised pigs. I was totally enamored with the creatures. You would have thought the memory would fade, but it didn’t. To this day, I can’t resist them.
Descending from the wild boar, domestic pigs have been a food staple around the world for 9,000 to 10,000 years. Of course, pork is tasty to eat, but pigs also have a delightful personality and are the most intelligent of all farm animals. As smart as dogs, pigs can be taught to retrieve, to dance, to pull a cart, to scent land mines, and can be easily housebroken.
Not that I would want to have a pig as a pet. But I do appreciate that their likenesses are available in charming versions for decorating our homes. Especially in the kitchen.
I hope the selection we have chosen here will entice you to learn more about and admire pigs. Put them in your home and you’ll smile each time you look at them.
