An interior designer refreshes a guest bedroom with thoughtful updates
When Jerry and Brenda Cooper told me they wanted to refresh their guest bedroom after living in their home for 42 years, my goal was simple: create a beautiful, welcoming space without replacing everything they already loved.
Rather than starting from scratch, I proposed keeping all of the existing furniture and investing in thoughtful updates that would completely transform the room. It’s a perfect example of how great design doesn’t always require a major renovation or a large budget.
We began by painting the walls and built-in bookshelves in a soft, neutral color, instantly brightening the space and creating a timeless backdrop. While I wanted to keep the walls subtle and not overly bold, I decided to introduce color in a more unexpected way by painting the ceiling a beautiful blue. This added depth and visual interest without overwhelming the room. The original dark bronze hardware was replaced with elegant clear-and-gold pulls, adding a fresh, sophisticated touch.
To bring warmth and comfort into the room, I selected a new area rug, a stylish desk chair, custom draperies, three custom accent pillows, and a cozy throw at the foot of the bed. The stunning artwork above the bed, sourced from a local art gallery, became the room’s focal point and adds personality and character. The remaining bedding was thoughtfully selected from local retailers, while every decorative accessory throughout the room was carefully curated from pieces the homeowners already owned. By thoughtfully repurposing and styling their existing accessories in a fresh way, we created a layered, collected look that feels both personal and timeless without unnecessary spending.
One of my favorite updates was installing wall sconces above the bedside tables. Since the homeowners were using small tables rather than traditional nightstands, the sconces freed up valuable surface space while adding both charm and functionality.
This guest bedroom reminds you that you don’t have to spend a fortune to create a space that feels fresh, elegant, and inviting. By honoring the home’s history and building on what was already there, Jerry and Brenda now have a beautiful retreat that’s ready to welcome family and friends for many holiday seasons to come.
