Dress up your closet with stylish organization and luxury features
Closets can easily become cluttered catch-alls for clothes, shoes and accessories. Carolina Closets creates custom designs to optimize space with sophisticated flair. We chatted with senior design consultant Stacey Moseley to learn more about designing and organizing for a more luxurious experience.
How do you decide the best way to organize each closet space?
That basically comes down to the individual, how they get dressed, and do they get dressed in their closet? If so, you definitely want drawers. Do they hang most of their clothes? You won’t need very many shelves or drawers or pull-out trays if they hang everything.
What is most requested when you’re designing a new closet space?
Everybody loves islands. And then, of course, hang-wise, people like double-hang because you have a shirt at the top and then right below it is another rod of pants.
Tell us a little bit more about the island.
A lot of times. . . I will put drawers in there and usually a hamper on the front, hamper on the back because one side is one person and one is another, oftentimes with the double jewelry tray in the island.
What are the most popular materials you use?
A lot of people love glass doors. I love doing designs with LED lighting and glass doors and crown molding. Everybody seems to like Shaker-style drawer fronts.
Can you tell me more about the luxury features that give the space an upgrade?
It definitely is the floor-mounted units, something that goes floor to ceiling with crown molding touching the ceiling. If there’s a unit that has shelves or shoe shelves, I’ll put mirrored doors on it. I’ll put a bench where someone can sit, put their shoes on. In a house recently, I just put in . . . a shoe carousel.
What are some of the most common challenges clients face when organizing their closets?
When there’s awkward layouts and angles of the walls . . . or different ceiling heights. If it’s an existing home, sometimes I’ll walk in and literally there’s stuff everywhere in the closet. So starting from there, I just group an area slowly. You have to take it like, I’m going to look at this wall. What does he or she have here? What’s on the floor? What’s at the ceiling?
How does having a custom closet impact clients’ lives?
Usually people are extremely excited because it’s nice. It definitely takes out the stress of going to their closet, since they use it every day, so they can see everything and get to everything.
