This multi-tiered Lake Keowee home puts the lake and the views front and center
Though Lance, Kelly, and Case Hogg live in Woodway, Texas, they’ve already started enjoying their “Mountain Modern” getaway home at The Reserve at Lake Keowee. “We visited Lake Keowee and immediately fell in love,” Kelly says. “Coming from Texas, we enjoyed the milder climate and the beauty of the lake and mountain views.”
With almost 7,000 square feet, the lakefront home is the work of MHK Architecture and designed to capture as many lake views as possible. “From the street level, you can see the lake through the shed dormer windows,” says Tre Mason of MHK. “We wanted the design to complement the beautiful, natural landscape and never take away from it.”
Real wood siding and natural stone offer a sense of connection between the home and its half-acre lot. The multilevel design ensures an array of dormers and large windows bathe the interior spaces in natural light. Mason credits the work of Stillwater Group, the builder, for their instrumental role in bringing the 4-bedroom, 3.5-bath design to fruition.
“The design was not free of its unique challenges and details, and Stillwater Group pulled them all off,” Mason says.
Kelly Hogg worked with The Stillwater Group’s team to capture an elevated-yet-welcoming feel to the almost 7,000-square-foot home’s interior. Different lighting elements—from Gallery of Lighting—are incorporated into the home to create an inviting feel.
“Our home has a very welcoming, casual, and comfortable-yet-elevated feel,” she says. “And the lake is truly the star of the show.”
After a few months of enjoying the home, completed in August 2023, the Hoggs have found their favorite space is the screened porch on the main level. The fireplace and built-in grill guarantee year-round family gatherings with lake views. “It’s our go-to spot for morning coffee, watching football, or evening cocktails,” Kelly Hogg says.
Mason says tiering the home not only allowed them to work with the natural grade of the lot while controlling the foundation costs, but it lends an added sense of privacy when you walk down to the primary suite or the VIP suite that is located on terrace level. “The garage is a foot and a half higher than the main living space, and the primary suite is three feet below the main living space,” Mason says. “And the terrace level does the same thing.”
A stairwell extends from the front of the home to the terrace level. It wraps around a stone feature wall visible from the exterior. This funnels even more natural light into the terrace area, which also features a media room, wet bar, wine room, and office.
“MHK knocked it out of the park with our design,” Kelly Hogg says. “We couldn’t be happier with how our home functions. We have spectacular views from every single room.”
